Hawkins Centers of Learning Oct. 14-17, 2011 in Boulder

It was fantastic to see Ellen in Maine last weekend. After our conference at Breakwater School with Lella Gandini and the wonderful work that evolved throughout the day, I am primed to take part in another Hawkins gathering. I have no doubt it will be an amazing weekend.

Looking forward…!

play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul by Stuart Brown, MD

I just got this from Amazon today…looking forward to reading about play from the perspective from an MD. The back cover states, “play: the single most significant factor in determining our success and happiness.”

“Messing About in Science -Making Visible the Thinking and Ideas of David and Frances Hawkins: Supporting Continued Action in Teaching and Learning”

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We are delighted to share information about Lesley University’s Reggio Inspired Conference Pre-Institute Day…

“Messing About in Science -Making Visible the Thinking and Ideas of David and Frances Hawkins: Supporting Continued Action in Teaching and Learning”

This is truly a dream come true.  This is a day filled with panel presentations, workshops, and dialogue; a day to celebrate first steps towards a traveling exhibit,  an enhanced and expanded website, and the publication of Betty Kellogg’s wonderful book featuring photos and reflections on the Mountain View Center for Environmental Education.

Please forward the attached brochure to colleagues and friends. We hope to see you in Cambridge in April.

The Arc of the moral Universe

07-Pride-In-The-Name-Of-Love.mp3

“Dr King once said that ‘The Arc of the Moral Universe is long but it bends toward justice’… it bends toward justice. But here’s the thing- it does not bend on its own. It bends because each one of us in our own ways, put our hand on that arc and we bend it in the direction of justice because we organize and we mobilize…” I am taking this from a piece of an Obama speech that is used on The CD “YES WE CAN: Voices of Grassroots Movement” It can be heard at the end of the song “Pride in the Name of Love” by John Legend.

2009–what it meant to me

The 2009 gathering has been a time of renewal and inspiration.
- Gracious home hospitality made it possible for the many aspects of the gathering to flow naturally.
- Everyone was free and welcome to participate in her or his own way, when moved or invited.
- People brought their creative talents and shared them generously: activities for playing with balance, incredibly beautiful undersea videography, wood scrap sculptures.
- Every conversation was a welcome gift–helpful references, approaches to research, experiences of professional growth.
- Group conversations were well-exemplified reminders of what really matters to me about education.
- Play and creativity and fun were central; the idea came to me in the midst of the gathering to encorporate play time for the volunteer leaders in a collaborative research project in which I’m involved; I also began to consider the possibility of adapting the idea of a gathering to help advance the design in this work
- Partners found a natural place in the gathering

Many thanks to all who designed the gathering and who worked tirelessly and generously to make it happen. Thanks also to all those who came.
