-Ellen announced that the next gatheringSynthesis of Maine gathering: Ellen, Sam. Alison, Lauren and Mary

-Ellen announced that the next gathering will be held in Boulder from July 30-August 2, 2010.

Ideas generated out of the gathering:
Hawkins Centers of Learning Facebook Page:
-Sam has set this up (Lucinda is interested in helping with it)
-Sam will send out an e-mail telling people about it and will also put a link to it on the Hawkins blog, and website.
-Sam will post a link to the Messing About article.
Ellen will post the defining characteristics of Hawkins Centers of Learning as well as the writing that Sue and she did for a possible brochure.
-Mary will add photos of teachers working in the Hawkins Room at Boulder Journey School and start a list of books and articles (discussed at the gathering.).
-Lauren will send updates to the group: We hope this will help to keep up people’s interest in visiting and adding to the page.
-Alison will add continual updates relating to the teacher education program at Boulder Journey School.
-Sam will begin thinking about a Hawkins Centers logo and he will post to the group that we are interested in any ideas that people might have about a logo.
-We will ask Barry if he would like to put something about balance up.
-Each of us will respond to Laura’s post, and we will each aim to respond to a post or add something new once a week.
-Creation of new topics for the discussion board

Lesley Pre- Institute April 30, 2010:
-Ellen will be concentrating on this.
-Ellen will talk to Laura about being the point person for keeping the group updated about the pre-institute.
-Ellen, Alison and Mary will continue to work on the exhibit content in order to bring a piece of it to the pre-institute.
Hawkins Exhibit:
-For the October initiative: materials available for the participants that would possibly be part of the exhibit in order to get feedback.
Hawkins Room:
-We feel like we have gotten away from Science-would like to introduce materials with more of a “messing about” focus.
-Materials that teachers could explore if they had a small window of time.
-Talk to Barry about helping with this.
-Hosting workshops for teachers in the community in the Hawkins Room.

Other Ideas:
-Mary-Look up Nuffield Junior Science Project
-Ellen and Barry-Meeting with Betty to look at her books, interest in having them published
-Sam-Creating Wikki for Hawkins Centers of Learning
-Diane and Barry-Publishing mirror ball experience
-Shifting out woodshop at Boulder Journey School based on our work with Blake creating wood sculptures.
-Meeting as a group each month
-Keeping the rest of the Hawkins Group updated on what we are doin
will be held in Boulder from July 30-August 2, 2010.

“Dr King once said that ‘The Arc of the Moral Universe is long but it bends toward justice’… it bends toward justice. But here’s the thing- it does not bend on its own. It bends because each one of us in our own ways, put our hand on that arc and we bend it in the direction of justice because we organize and we mobilize…” I am taking this from a piece of an Obama speech that is used on The CD “YES WE CAN: Voices of Grassroots Movement” It can be heard at the end of the song “Pride in the Name of Love” by John Legend.

The 2009 gathering has been a time of renewal and inspiration.
- Gracious home hospitality made it possible for the many aspects of the gathering to flow naturally.
- Everyone was free and welcome to participate in her or his own way, when moved or invited.
- People brought their creative talents and shared them generously: activities for playing with balance, incredibly beautiful undersea videography, wood scrap sculptures.
- Every conversation was a welcome gift–helpful references, approaches to research, experiences of professional growth.
- Group conversations were well-exemplified reminders of what really matters to me about education.
- Play and creativity and fun were central; the idea came to me in the midst of the gathering to encorporate play time for the volunteer leaders in a collaborative research project in which I’m involved; I also began to consider the possibility of adapting the idea of a gathering to help advance the design in this work
- Partners found a natural place in the gathering

Many thanks to all who designed the gathering and who worked tirelessly and generously to make it happen. Thanks also to all those who came.

A word on Betty’s book–as many of you know, it is progressing well. Her son Tom, with his tech skills, has put in many hours to help her assemble photos, text and ongoing edits. I am honored to give input on it now and then. I currently have the drafts and am poring over them. Her work is so important and will delight Hawkins followers and help form content for the documentary. A big thank you to Ellen also for her work on behalf of the Hawkins these past years.

Hope everyone is well and having a good Election Day.

It is our privilege to offer you all of the articles from the original Outlook Issue No. 1, published by the Mountain View Center for Environmental Education in the winter of 1970.

Mary and Lauren have been working incredibly hard getting these Outlooks scanned. I am way behind in posting so I should be able to get a few issues uploaded in the next few weeks.

If you read an article and feel like sharing your reflections, please post comments to this thread. I am very excited to get some dialogue started around these amazing treasures.

I will post all of the articles under one thread for now, but if the commenting becomes confusing we can separate each article into it’s own post. Anyways, without further delay, please enjoy Outlook Issue #1!
